Germany: Why is so much fruit and veg packaged in plastic?

While plastic bags at the cash register are disappearing, it seems more and more obvious that consumers can also contribute to the reduction of packaging material. However, 17 million tons of packaging such as cardboard, paper or plastic still go over the counter every year, only to be disposed of afterwards. In Germany people can often leave the waste in the supermarket. But why is there still so much packaging material being used? Organic apples and bananas in bags, shrink-wrapped cucumbers; is all that necessary?

Due to the ever-growing divide between organic and conventional, a clear difference must be made in the presentation, according to bayern3.de. But why then is the Biogurke still wrapped in foil? Well, organic and conventional products are not allowed not touch each other during transport or in the store. And since organic products are still bought less often than conventional products, it is only these products that are 'protected' with foil.
