China: Chile and Mexico fight for the avocado market

T-mall statistics shows that sales of avocados in 2017 reached 70 million yuan. In 2018, this number may exceed up to 170 million yuan! Avocados have become one of the top best-selling fruits on T-mall, with sales rising by 300-400% as Mexican and Chilean farmers compete for the huge Chinese market.

Chinese merchants inspect overseas avocado processing areas

The Mexican Chancellor of Commerce in Shanghai predicts that within 10 years China will surpass the United States and become the largest importer of Mexican avocados. Mexico and Chile are the two major countries that produce avocados. Chilean avocados are cheaper, while Mexican avocados have a better quality. From every 10 avocados, that have been sold on T-mall, 7 were from Mexico. The demand for avocados on the Chinese market is growing quickly and the competition among the fruit growers in these two countries is rising.

Avocados began to gain popularity in 2015. Since that time, T-mall has been selling them actively. From the niche product, it has turned into the peoples' favorite. Every year, the Chinese market consumes about 15 million kilograms of avocados.
