Fruttital: South American melon producers more and more interested in eastern markets

As one of Simba's customers (see related article), the company Fruttital distributes Del Monte branded products on the Italian market, thanks to its connections with wholesale markets and great distributors.

FreshPlaza has interviewed Paolo Mauti, sales manager of Fruttital: "The commercial period for counter-seasonal melons goes from October to May. The first arrivals are those from Brazil, followed in January by the production from Costa Rica. Brazilian melons represent 65% of our offer, while the product from Costa Rica represents 30%".

"Volumes are reduced this season, in comparison to last year - Paolo says - because of various factors, such as higher production costs in Brazil, unfavorable weather conditions in Costa Rica, but also a new commercial strategy which is arising toward the South American producers. They are more and more interested in some remunerative eastern markets, as for example China, India and Russia. This strategy involves all the fruit sector in general, not the melons' one only".

The main varieties which are sold by Fruttital are: Cantaloupe melons (about 1,100 MT in total, both from Brazil and Costa Rica), Honey Dew melons (2,300 MT in total) and a small quantity of Piel De Sapo melons (about 200 MT). Amongst watermelons, the most sold varieties by Fruttital are Quetzali and Mickeylee (200 MT only, in the period from January to May).

"With regard to the products' quality - Paolo adds - Honey Dew melons are the best ones and we are experimenting an increasing good quality for the Cantaloupe too. Piel de Sapo is more and more in demand, while counterseasonal watermelons are not so active on the Italian market, due to the low request during winter".
