La Libertad, the largest avocado export region in Peru

The region of La Libertad region managed to position itself as the first national avocado export department in 2017 after having exported 117,203 tons. 

This has helped Peru become the second biggest exporter of this fruit worldwide. Peru exported 264,672 tons to 35 foreign countries. Its main customers were the Netherlands and the United States.

According to the Agricultural Information Office of the Regional Management of Agriculture of La Libertad (GRALL), avocado exports allowed the region to make $280,846,873 dollars.

The main producing provinces in the region were Viru, which accounts for 79.5% of the 157,353 tons of Hass and Fuerte variety produced; Chepen, with 10% of the production; Trujillo with 3.9%; Gran Chimu, with 2.4%; Otuzco, with 1.8%, and the remaining seven producing provinces with 2% of the total.

"We are proud of the improvement we've had. In 2016 we only exported 60,693 tons of avocados and also ranked as the biggest producers at the national level. We are proud to continue being the ranked first, not only because of the title, but also because it means that 1,523 farmers in La Libertad are benefiting from this," said the regional manager of Agriculture, Hernan Aquino Dionisio, manager of GRALL.
