Low harvest volumes of Brazilian grapes
HF Brazil mentions that the current rainfall pushed the prices up even more. It’s expected that volumes will increase from April on.
Citrus
“In the São Paulo market of oranges, the supply of quality fruit is only limited. This has kept the prices high. It’s expected that these prices will be maintained, as the harvest of late varieties is almost closed and the start of the early harvest, scheduled for March, hasn´t started yet”, explains HF Brasil in their citrus update.
Melon
Melon producers from the Valle del São Francisco (BA/PE), intensified the planting of melon production this month, for the harvest from April to July according to HF Brasil. “Normally, the increase in humidity in this region is favourable to the preparation of the soil. However, an excess of rain could hinder the fieldwork. At the beginning, la Niña was expected to bring good rain volumes during the summer 2017/2018 of Brazil. However, because of the weakening of the phenomenon rainfall is less than expected in Northeast.” It is mentioned that for now, these producers can maintain the area planted in 2017 and increase investments in technology.
Mango
“Mango prices in the Petrolina / Juazeiro region (PE/BA) continue to perform well, given the gradual increase in prices. Low volume and rising demand in the region are the factors that are pushing the prices.” According to the publication, the volumes of especially Tommy mangoes are low and decreasing, as only the Vale do São Francisco region has supply.
Papaya
The weather has had a great impact on the papaya production in Brazil. “Excessive ripe fruit continued to affect the commercialization of papaya Formosa last week. As a result, prices remained limited nationally. According to producers, rainfall, followed by high temperatures in the producing regions (especially in the North of Espírito Santo and in the South of Bahia) accelerated the maturation, making it necessary to discard those still in the fields.”
