Willem de Boer, Boer & Zn:

“Quality of carrots more bad than good”

Although reports about the carrot market are becoming slightly more positive and prices are rising a bit, it continues to be a difficult market. “Quality is more bad than good,” says Willem de Boer of Boer & Zn. from Westwoud, the Netherlands. Good quality is unaffordable and too expensive to sell on the market, according to Willem. The company sorts, cleans and packs carrots, and as a link in the supply chain, they are therefore in a difficult position. “But we’re still early in the season, so we’ll just wait and see what’ll happen.”

Is the beetroot trade interesting for Boer & Zn? “Nothing is currently happening in that. We haven’t even sold half a tonne. Due to overproduction, there’s no trade whatsoever in beetroot. We always say four hectares of early beetroot is more than enough, but we have about 20 to 30 hectares. However, beetroots can be stored fairly well. We can supply them until about mid-May, but after that, the new beets will arrive on the market.”

However, Willem continues to be positive. “Everything will be fine. It can still go in any direction.”
