Switzerland approves import quota of 8,000 tonnes of apples

Due to the frosty nights of April 2017, the apple harvest in Switzerland was quite modest last year. Therefore, significantly fewer apples are currently in stock than a year ago.

The Federal Office of Agriculture has now approved an import quota of 8,000 tonnes at the request of the fruit industry, as is reported by the Aargauer Zeitung. These quotas will run until the end of April. These imports will serve as a supplement to the local supply. It is expected that as of May, when most Swiss apples will be sold out, the borders would be opened completely to foreign apples, it goes on to say. If there had been a regular crop this year, this would not be the case until mid-June.
