First BelOrta aubergines auctioned off

Rise of mediterranean cuisine plays into hands of aubergine sales

Last week, the first aubergines of the new season were traded by BelOrta. These first Flandria aubergines were supplied by producers Heulens and Jansen and bought by Bollaerts Primeurs and Continental Fruit for Group Achiel de Witte, for €2.59 per kilogram.

Considerable area increase in 2018
In 2017, more than 11,000,000 kilograms of Flandria aubergines were supplied to BelOrta. For this year, BelOrta has reported a considerable increase of 24 per cent in its area. This rise in production is undoubtedly boosted by the emergence of the mediterranean cuisine, in which aubergine plays an important part. The aubergine season normally lasts from February to November.

Pre-eminent grill and barbecue vegetable
The rising popularity of aubergines is also expressed in the diversified BelOrta assortment, with various special varieties such as the Turkish, the white, and the striped (graffiti) variants. For some years now, BelOrta has also offered the ‘Oven & Grill pack aubergine,’ a convenient kit with oil and herbs. In short, everything to easily prepare delicious barbecue or oven vegetables. BelOrta’s social media features inspirational recipes for aubergines, and a brand new barbecue can even be won.
