Supplies of raspberries are in a transition phase as Mexico volume continues to ramp up. California supplies are now completely exhausted and will not appear again until the Spring. Therefore, supplies are short and shippers are waiting for volume to increase in Mexico.
"Raspberry supplies are very limited at the moment," said Carolyn Chang of Interfresh. "Although Mexico production has started, there is not much in the market and will continue to be subdued until around February 2. There are also none in California until their season starts again in April, creating a tight market. Initial volumes from Mexico are just starting up through the major border points of Nogales, Baja, as well as Texas."
Favorable weather in Mexico growing regions
The start of the season in Mexico is looking good as the weather is assisting in providing solid numbers. The recent cooler and wetter weather in Mexico has not affected the fruit and growers are expecting a moderate increase in volume this season.
"So far, the weather has been on our side," said Chang. "The wet weather has not brought any damage as the majority of production is done under hoop houses. Therefore, up to an inch of rain can fall in the region and will not damage the crop. This year, we expect more supply from Mexico as there has been additional acreage planted, including from some of the major producers."
Market strong but easing
Because raspberry supplies have been limited, the market price has been elevated in recent weeks. The market is easing now that Mexico supplies are beginning to trickle in, and prices should reduce further as volume increases. "As we continue to see limited supplies, prices are currently between $18 - $20," Chang explained. "This is down from over $20 in recent weeks, and as supplies increase, prices will continue to ease."
For retailers, raspberries are set to appear on shelves in the regular 6oz and 12oz clamshells, however, Chang noted that some have also introduced larger packs, particularly large discount chains. "6oz and 12oz clamshells continue to experience the bulk of raspberry demand," she said. "There are also larger 2lb packs now on shelves."
