Italy: Promising new strawberry selection in Basilicata

Strawberry harvesting in Basilicata started a while ago, depending on variety and location. For Mirco Zoffoli from Cesena, strawberries from Basilicata represent the start of the commercial season.

"I work with a company from Nova Siri that started harvesting a few days ago. The variety hasn't been registered yet, but we are currently testing this selection and is looking very promising."

These strawberries have good organoleptic qualities with a good Brix level, especially considering that it's January. "Sometimes, during this season, there are strawberries with a flavour reminiscent of potatoes or turnips, but this one's excellent. Texture is also great. If things go as I hope they will, we will have a new variety that could be a great alternative to other excellent varieties in a few years' time."

Zoffoli commercialises strawberries on markets in northern Italy and abroad. "We have excellent contacts with Switzerland, where it is actually very difficult to stand out due to the high level demanded."

Over the past few years, Zoffoli has also been producing strawberries while he is only focusing on commercialisation this year.
