Producers will start harvesting it at the end of January

Uruguay: Yvyra, a new apple variety

Grupo Viveros del Uruguay (GVU), has managed to obtain the first variety of a uniquely Uruguayan apple through controlled crossbreeds. This new variety is the Yvyra apple. It is a variety that has a low cold winter requirement (300 units of cold, Richardson method). It's plant is rustic, vigorous, moderately tolerant to Venturia, very productive, and has a good aptitude for refrigerated conservation. Its fruit has an intense red color and ripens 30 days before the Red Delicious variety. The Yvyra differs from other varieties because of the rusticity of its plant, which facilitates its cultivation, its characteristic sweet taste, and its five-pointed elongated fruit, which is reminiscent of the Red Delicious apple grown in cold weather.

Roberto Zeballos, one of the engineers responsible for the project, stated "it is a new protected variety in Uruguay, which is currently just being planted. It was commercially planted in winter of 2017 by the Moizo Fruits company, which had been observing it since it bore its first fruits in the experimental plots. It is a very interesting apple for the Uruguayan market, but our intention is to take it to all the countries that are looking for a variety with low cold requirements, that is very productive, and has a sweet and intense flavor. Brazil is our first objective. It should work very well there and it could replace early red apple imports from the region."

The group of nurseries that developed the Yvyra is working on other apple hybrid varieties and other types of fruits, such as nectarines and peaches. "We expect that Uruguayan producers will plant many hectares of Yvyra apples in the coming year and that their production will grow to reach an exportable volume, within the early red apples niche," Zeballos said.

"This apple variety is very promising and, even though it still has to pass many tests and controls, we are confident that the Yvyra will be a success," he said.
