Banana Forum 2017
Challenges and opportunities of the Colombian banana sector
The Banana Association of Magdalena and La Guajira, ASBAMA, is getting ready to hold the Banana Forum 2017 "Sustainable Production: Challenges and Opportunities of the Colombian Banana Sector", an event that includes the participation of recognized national and international experts and with which it intends to continue institutionalizing spaces for analysis, reflection and the generation of significant contributions on issues and relevant issues of this transcendental line of production.
The forum will be held on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm and Thursday, November 30, 2017 from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm at the Cajamag Pepe Vives Campo of Santa Marta Theater, in Magdalena. It will have a varied agenda in which leading national and international academics and researchers, producers, technicians and entrepreneurs from the sector will be able to discuss the challenges of growth and sustainable development of the Colombian banana industry.
The 2017 version of the ASBAMA Forum will address fundamental issues in the sector's agenda such as: productivity indicators, prevention and/or care of diseases, water resource management, management and conservation of soils with a salinity tendency, organic production, risks associated with climatic or market variables, among other aspects of the productive context of the crop that generate a constant challenge in terms of quality, productivity, competitiveness and business efficiency of the banana production chain.
One of the panelists, Dr. Gert Kema, a Professor of Tropical Phytopathology at Wageningen University & Research (The Netherlands), will hold the keynote address entitled "Advances in the understanding and management of Fusarium wilt in bananas." Dr. Fernando Garcia-Bastidas, a Researcher of Bio-interactions and Plant Health of the Group of Vegetal Sciences and the plant pathology and reproduction laboratory at Wageningen University & Research (The Netherlands), will accompany Dr. Kema and other experts in the panel "The future of bananas: risks and threats of destructive and lethal diseases."
"ASBAMA expects that the III Version of the Banana Forum will be a space where the sector can have fundamental debates, reflections and contributions in the search of greater possibilities of success for the banana sector of the region, which is faced with the imperative to grow in a sustainable way in a challenging context that poses more and more limitations, but also new opportunities and challenges," stated Anuar Escaf Mendoza, its Executive President.
