Spain: Chestnut and sweet potato consumption not affected by heat

The wholesalers of Mercabarna expect to sell about 900 tonnes of chestnuts and another 700 of sweet potatoes for the celebration of the traditional Castanyada; a figure similar to last year, even though the temperatures have not been ideal.

As reported by the Association of Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Entrepreneurs of Mercabarna (AGEM), specialised in these typical fruits, chestnut sales this year will remain at around 900 tonnes, although the productions of the main origins, especially Galicia, have also been affected by high temperatures.

As for sweet potatoes, sales will amount to about 700 tonnes; a volume that has been stabilising after five years of gradual sales increases.

Regarding prices, wholesalers have reported that chestnuts are slightly cheaper than a year ago, while sweet potatoes cost more or less the same as last year.
