47 percent fewer plums expected

With an expected volume of 19.900 tonnes, the 2017 harvest of plums and zwetschge in Germany is expected to be 47% lower than the one in 2016. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) estimates that volumes will be as much as 60% less than average harvest volumes (50,300 tonnes) in the last 10 years. Severe night frosts at the end of April 2017 led to these drastic crop failures.

On the other hand, the cultivation area of plums and zwetschge has risen by almost 8% since 2012 from just under 3,900 hectares to almost 4,200 hectares. With some 1.800 hectares Baden-Württemberg is the most important state for plum cultivation, followed by Rhineland-Palatinate with almost 900 hectares. These two regions will be responsible for half of the 2017 German plum harvest.
