China: Gansu onion price doubles

"From July, onions from all over China have gradually entered the market. This year, the total Gansu production has not changed much. Currently, the net selling price for Gansu onions in China is 820 per ton. Compared to last year's 260 yuan, it has more than doubled. This is mainly because of the increase in production costs and export growth," according to Mr. Zhang Wenjin, Gansu onion purchaser and seller.

"The onion production area in Gansu is around 23,000 hectares. The annual production season lasts from August until January the next year. We purchase large quantities of onions from Gansu, of which 2/3 yellow onions and 1/3 red onions and onion seeds. These high quality onions are sold through traditional sales channels. They are sold to distributors and supermarkets in Guangzhou, Shandong, Henan, Hebei, Shanghai and Beijing, and exported to South Korea, Japan and Laos."

"This year's onion export has increased dramatically. Until the end of August, the Korean demand was huge. Later, from producers to storage owners, costs increased, and the onion price steadily rose. In the future, because the high price suppresses the demand, the Chinese market, export and storage quantities will decrease. This will slow down the development of the onion price."
