Adriaan van Belzen, Daily Onions:

"British demand for onions lagging behind"

While the United Kingdom might have been in the market for Dutch onions earlier in the season, the demand is lagging behind at the moment. According to Adriaan van Belzen of Daily Onions, this has been caused by a combination of factors. "The previous harvest lasted longer than normal, which means they started later with the onion sets. Furthermore, you do see the Brexit effect, since inflation keeps rising."

"Last year many British growers waited until the end of the season to sell their onions. Now you see, just like in the Netherlands, they are happy to get rid of their onions", continues Adriaan. He predicts that there will be a stable market over the next few months. "The sales channels are known and I see few surprises in store for the first part of the season. I don't know what will happen in February."

"It is true that the quality of the onions is not like last year's. Yet, many onions still come out of the ground in reasonable condition, unlike potatoes. It remains to be seen if the quality of the onions will remain reasonable. For the time being, finding larger sizes is proving to be a challenge. The larger the onion, the better the price. Bale prices are on average EUR 0,11/0,12, but go up to EUR 0,19/0,20 for the 'supers'."
