Rosalva Carreon, of Curenho:

"Mexico ready to meet Russia's high demand"

The large quantities of fruit and vegetables requested by Russia had been, until relatively recently, a handicap to complying with the terms of program contracts with producers from other areas of the world. However, there are already countries with the capacity to face part of this demand, and Mexico is one of them.

"I'd already had an approach from one of the main supermarket chains there about a year and a half ago. I prepared all the necessary documentation regarding logistics, but when I was on the verge of closing the deal, I decided not to because I was unsure of being able to offer all the merchandise that they requested at the price they asked for," said Rosalva Carreon, from CURENHO, SA DE CV. In time, after having expanded their commercial and logistical contacts network, and having acquired a greater knowledge of the global market, this Mexican company is finally ready to meet the Russian demand.

One of the products requested by Russia, which this Mexican logistics company will start shipping soon, is the Persian lime. To do this, they have contacted producers from the states of Veracruz, Chiapas, Colima, and Nayarit so as to send 10,000 tons of limes over about four months.

"Even though all the producers are certified in phytosanitary products in Mexico, not all of them have Global GAP and other necessary certifications for the European Union countries," Carreon said. "However, the state of Nayarit is helping producers to achieve these certifications and I think it is something that other states' agencies should do to promote agriculture. It is a chain in which we all win." But this is not a problem in Russia, as they do not require so many certifications, which makes the task easier, he added.
