New Zealand, Chile, Spain, Portugal, China, Greece, France and Italy - these are the countries that took part in the second Dorì Day, organised by Consorzio Dorì Europe in Campoverde di Aprilia (Latina) on 13th September 2017.

Guests arrived from all over the world to check the progress of the Ac1536 variety, the early golden kiwi safeguarded by the consortium. 16 months after the project started, there are now 300 hectares in Italy, 65 in Chile, 12 in France and 8 in Spain. The objective is to reach 1000 hectares in the next two years.

"We can currently count on 30 companies that produce 400 tons of Dorì kiwis. Two-year-old grafted plants start producing in the same year. Last season, we supplied not only Italian retailers, but South American and Asian ones well. These kiwis are very early, 45 days earlier than Hayward ones harvested at 7° Brix," explained Giampaolo Dal Pane.

Professor Guglielmo Costa from the University of Bologna illustrated what was discussed during the 9th international symposium on kiwis, held a few days ago in Portugal. "All the leading production areas took part. Producers are more optimistic as regards Psa. There is still no magic formula to solve the problem, but its aggressiveness can be significantly reduced."

Mulching films seem to be a good way of limiting the spread of the bacteria, as plants are protected against aggressive weather events such as wind and hail. This year, films have been useful against frost as well. Dal Pane explained that, in Latina, the frost registered between 22nd and 24th April 2017 zeroed the production on 3,000 hectares, while crops covered with films are producing normally.

"There are no resistant or completely tolerant varieties, but research is continuing. From a commercial point of view, the Portuguese symposium revealed China is at a crossroads: the global market will only be able to grow if the country continues to import. If it starts to export, there might be a few problems. China started off with 3,000 hectares and now has around 110 thousand with expectations to grow. In Italy, there are approximately 25 thousand hectares. Countries like Turkey and Iran and growing too."

According to Costa, Italian kiwis are appreciated worldwide, but exports are in the hands of many small companies. New Zealand has only one large exporter/producer and that's precisely its strength.

Over 250 people attended Dorì Day and technical tours were guided by Maurizio Dal Pane as well. The entire day was film by Agrilinea. Dorì Day is an annual event and the next one will be organised in Veneto.
