US main buyer of Mexican melons

In 2016, Mexican melon production exceeded 593 thousand tons and the United States became the main buyer of the Mexican fruit with almost 85% of the tonnage exported.

In 2015, Mexico recorded a favorable trade balance, as it exported 142 thousand tons of melon, which made for a profit of 34.3 million dollars, with the United States as the main buyer, because of the quality of the Mexican fruit.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (Sagarpa) reports in its blog that the main producing states are Coahuila (with 136 thousand tons); Michoacan (with 99 thousand tons) and Guerrero (with 89 thousand tons).

The melon is native to South Africa, from there it spread to Mediterranean countries and through commercial exchange reached the American Continent. It is currently distributed all over the world and is a very popular fruit in the market.

This Mexican fruit grows in warm, not excessively humid climates. It is nutritious and is a good choice to maintain hydration of the body, since about 92% of its composition is water, besides it has a high level of vitamins and minerals such as iron, phosphorus, potassium and sodium.
