China: Agricultural service industry has become important part of agricultural supply chain

"The good weather and expansion in production have led to a growth in the Shaanxi grape production of 10%-20%, compared to last year. The increase in supply has brought about a polarization of the grape price. The price for low quality grapes is lower than last year, but the price for high quality grapes is higher," according to Mr. Dong Yujiang of Shaanxi Tong Yi Agricultural Service Co., Ltd.

"Our company is located in Xianyang and Xingping, Shaanxi. We hold over 1000 hectares (10.000 mu) of grape production fields. We own over 100 hectares (1000 mu) ourselves. The rest is managed in collaboration with a cooperative. We mainly produce in the open air, and our main breed is Hutai No. 8. This breed enters the market in the middle of August, and leaves the market in October. Compared to other breeds, these feel better in your mouth, the flesh is thicker, they are sweeter, and the shelf life is longer. They are very popular amongst consumers. In Xingping, the production area of Hutai No. 8 has already surpassed the 4000 hectares (40.000 mu)."

"The degree of management of the farmer determines the production and quality of the fruit. Even though the production quantity has increased, we have found that the supply is now around 15.000 tons, which is lower than last year. In the past, we have offered our services to grape farmers through a cooperative. Through large scale management, we can realize effective quality control. Thus, we can rank our grapes, and sell them through traditional sales channels to distributors in first and second tier cities in China."
