China: Sudden hike in leek prices

According to the Voice of China's "Three Rural Issues", vegetable production is lacking. The scorching hot weather and frequent rain led to reduced production of several kinds of vegetables. Therefore, the price also goes up. The price of leeks, for example, has been going up and down for the past few years. It has not been stable. Last month, the price of northern leeks per 500 gram did not reach 1 yuan, but in the past few days, it has shot up to 2 yuan or even higher. This is a growth of 68%. Compared to last year, that is an increase of 110%. This rise has surprised many people.

The cause for this sudden increase in price is related to the frequent rainfall. This week's price has increased so much, because it has been raining frequently in Shandong lately. A lot of the leek is now submerged in rainwater, causing them to rot. Moreover, the continuous rainfall also influences the harvest and processing of leeks. When the production price increases and the production quantity is lower, eventually the market price will also increase.
