French tomato production decreases by 5%

According to the Minster of Agriculture, fresh tomato production in 2017 is estimated to reach 597,200 tons, a 5% decrease compared to 2016 despite a slight increase in acreage. It will still be 2% above the 2012-2016 average.

The season began with stable prices, but they then decreased below the 2012-2016 average when the offer increased. Summer weather conditions in June were good for demand which was late to start. Prices were then stable again as the offer was more restricted than in 2016. In June 2017 they were 30% above the prices recorded in June 2016 and 5% above the five year average.
