Italy: Harvesting of Melinda cherries now started

The harvesting of Melinda cherries has started in Val di Non. The main varieties are Kordia and Regina. It is still early to make an assessment on volumes but, due to the frost in April, only 30-40% of the volumes registered last year is expected.

"In 2016, we harvested 700 tons while, this year, we are expecting 250-300 tons."

Over the next three years, Melinda will also commercialise the cherries grown by partners of La Trentina PO, so quantities are expected to increase by 80 tons. The produce will be distributed under the "Amici di Melinda" brand.

The agreement will enable the company to strengthen its role as a supplier specialised in late cherries on the domestic and foreign markets between July and early August.

"In addition, we are telling producers with the higher orchards to plant the Giant Red variety, as it ripens 15 days earlier than Kordia."

Varieties
"Amici di Melinda" cherries, just like "Melinda", are all cultivated under tarpaulins.

Kordia has a deep red colour and a typical heart shape. It's the most appealing cherry and is characterised by a crunchy flesh with a high sugar content.

Regina is particularly resistant to cracking and is crunchy and juicy. Just like Kordia, it has a deep red colour and a high sugar content, but it has a more oblong shape.
