Italy: The Sicilian aubergine and pepper campaigns

It's time for an assessment for the aubergine and pepper campaign in southern Sicily. The situation in Vittoria was varied.

Over the past few days, entire pallets of yellow peppers were handed back to producers because they remained unsold. The campaign was rather complicated in general, as the weather affected almost all Sicilian businesses.

We talked to Fabio Alessandrello, who described his experience.

"The price of aubergines dropped during the last week of May due to the increased quantities caused by the higher temperatures as well as due to the fact that produce from Puglia and Verona became available."

"The aubergine season lasts from October until May and I have to say it's been rather positive. I must also say, however, that the adverse weather drastically reduced quantities between December and March, and that's why prices increased. In April, despite the increased volumes available, prices remained higher than last year."

Of course things weren't the same for all varieties. Those considered most prestigious and therefore in high demand withstood fluctuations well. This is evidence of the fact that diversification and innovation can truly make a difference.

"The price of streaked, white and mini aubergines remained stable because demand is high, especially from professional restaurateurs and niche consumers. Cultivated areas are expected to increase already next year."

If we compare the months of April-May with last year, we can see how profits exceeded €0.30/kg for some varieties.

Fabio's business also grows a very popular tomato variety.

"The green variety is actually more popular than the red one thanks to its superior quality and to the fact that the heat favours the consumption of salad. Prices are not fair due to the great quality of this product, but we must consider that production has started in the Netherlands and northern Europe."

2016/17 was a good year for peppers as well.

"Sweet horn pepper were particularly popular thanks to the fact that they are easy to digest."
