UK Peppers see good production and demand
Lea Valley Grower's Association grow 60% of the UK's sweet peppers, 200 million each year, under 350 acres of glass.
The association's secretary, Lee Stiles said the season was going very well and, as they sell directly to the main retailers on a fixed price basis, they are not affected by large volumes.
As well as bell peppers, Lea Valley Growers grow Romero, pointy and sweet bite peppers all of which are in production just now. The season started in January and will run to November if weather stays how it is.
"There is great demand for peppers due to their diversity," explains Lee. "They are not just for using in salads but are also becoming a winter vegetable used in stews etc."
He goes on to say that Sweet Bite which are ideal for lunch boxes have seen a big increase in demand in recent years as have the mini cucumbers.
Lea Valley growers are always trialling different varieties and growing techniques.
