Mexico: Lime production improves in Colima

Even though the trees are still suffering from the effects of the Yellow Dragon plague that has affected Colima since 2010, the production of limes is beginning to recover with the 20 thousand hectares of limes planted in Armeria, Tecoman and Coquimatlan.

"According to our most recent calculations we will possibly exceed 200 thousand tons. It is not an optimal number, if we consider that 6 years ago we produced up to 680 thousand tons. However, the disease lowered our production to 130 thousand tons, so we are recovering."

The president of the Lime Council of the State of Colima, Gonzalo CastaƱeda Bazavilvazo, said that in order not to depend on government support and improve the price that producers receive for fruit, they needed to promote the creation of marketers so that the intermediaries don't retain the profits.

"Currently, producers are being paid 4 pesos per kilogram of lime but last week I saw limes being sold at 29.90 pesos per kilo to the consumers here in Colima. That is to say the two ends of the marketing chain are affected by this intermediation."

The producer said that when the marketers materialize, they will be able to increase the price paid to producers, as it is currently governed by the price of the fruit in Michoacan, even though Colima's limes last longer on the shelf, i.e. they are of better quality.
