Production of Brazilian Prata bananas shows 30% increase

“This year the production has increased 30% if you compare this with the same period in 2016. This is the result of new plantations, better climate conditions and improved technologies”, states Ivanete Pereira from Abonorte Brazil. “In fact the Brazilian growers have the opportunity to change the banana market. As the Prata banana has a very particular flavor and taste, foreign consumers might switch and prefer the Prata instead of the Cavendish.”

Ivanete explains that several regions in Brazil experienced some climate problems in 2015, which reduced the production of the Prata banana. “This consequently has led to less supply to the internal market. The internal market became attractive for growers as they received high prices for their products. The internal market is very important for the growers, however, we depend completely on the demand.”

“Abanorte has participated at the exhibition Fruit Logistica since 2008 with their main goal being to increase exports of fruits from the Jaíba region. Growers have exported their Prata bananas to markets such as Belgium, the UK and Portugal. Mostly these were commercial partnerships that worked together with some supermarket chains.”
