Italy: Green Energy produces organic grapes and apricots

Green Energy is a recently-established company that works with skilled labourers in the Acate territory (RG).

Table grapes were planted in March last year, under structures that are very simple but which nonetheless guarantee a good management of the climatic aspects. "This is very important because, as the produce is destined to the organic market, it helps us control fungal diseases."

"Temperatures must be monitored carefully as it's thanks to this monitoring that we managed to avoid the damage caused elsewhere by this winter's bad weather. Setting was excellent and pathogens were kept under control using natural products," explains technician Rosario Novara.

The 12-hectare vineyard is made up of 14,000 plants grafted with Victoria and Red Globe plus another 10,000 rooted vines grafted with Red Globe which will start producing next year and another 4,000 rooted vines which will be grafted with a seedless variety.

The structure and plant layout allows light to penetrate between the leaves and facilitate crop and harvesting operations.

But Green Energy does not only mean excellent table grapes, as it also owns 2 hectares of organic Kyoto apricots.

"We still have to draft our statement as we've just started, but we expect demand to be good, as our produce is organic and certified by CCPB in Bologna."

"We have both processing and storage warehouses, so we can be ready for various things. In the future, we might even tackle the market with our own brand, but we tend to produce niche products, so we would like to try out different options. The idea is to launch a range for the H&R sector and maybe for e-commerce."

"Currently, our production calendar starts in early June with Victoria and continues a few weeks later for Red Globe, for which we have duly paid the royalties."
