"Our cherry season starts earlier"

375,000 euro for export Albanian fresh produce

"For many, Albania is still a relatively unknown country in the fresh produce trade, but we are devoting more and more to export. Besides various types of fruit and vegetables, we also offer fresh herbs. We are already exporting to various countries, but would like to expand this,” says Grezda Lauresha of the Albanian Ministry of Agriculture. “For this, we are receiving 50 million Albanian Lek (375,000 euro) in financial support of the government.”

Berthold Wohlleber of GiZ, a German company that supports countries in international trade, Grezda was at the Macfrut in Rimini with 13 Albanian companies, at a stand filled with products from Albania. “We support the country in the export to various countries, and we give them advice.”

Ideal climate

Grezda: “We supply to countries such as Poland, Germany and the Netherlands, and meet all of the requirements they ask for. We also see potential in other European countries and Arabian buyers.” She emphasises that Albania has the ideal climate for growing fruit and vegetables. “We get a lot of sun and plenty of rain. Because of this, the fruit and vegetables taste delicious. Our cherry season starts early in the year, so that we can supply certain European countries when their own production hasn’t started yet. Each region has its own fruit and vegetables. Albania also offers citrus, grapes and exotics.”
