Bavaria:

Clear tendency towards regional foods among consumers

The results of a representative poll of citizens on nutrition in Bavaria showed that Bavarians trust in their region: 61% of Baviarians fully trust the foods from their local growers. 56% trust foodstuffs from all of the state Bavaria. The survey was conducted on behalf of the Bavarian state ministry for nutrition, agriculture and forestry (StMELF).

The Survey
The survey "Nutrition in Bavaria" was conducted by the regional institute for mid-sized market research, RIM Marktforschung GmbH, on behalf of the StMELF, the KErn. Participants of the poll were adults (18 or older), in private households within the Freestate Bavaria (approximately 10.8 Million persons) who have access to the internet. The survey was carried out between the 4th and 18th of April of this year and RIM chose an "Online Access-Panel", which 1,010 individuals took part in.

The Main Results
The Bavarians trust their state but especially their own region: 61% of respondents felt utmost or at least great trust towards local products. 56% of respondents trusted foods from the state of Bavaria.

Nevertheless, the Bavarian consumers want more information on the regional products as well. According to the current survey, 52% of respondents always or most of the time pay attention to where their meat and meat products are from. For unpackaged bread and baked goods it is 54%, fresh fruit and vegetables 52% and 51% for milk and milk products. When buying other foodstuffs, such as convenience products, only 25% say they consider the origin.

Key decision points: Shelf life and Ingredients

Whether to buy a product or not depends on the expiration date for 79% of participants. Half of the Bavarians pays attention to the list of ingredients and will take them into account when buying foods. 82% say that they take this information from the packaging.

Every fifth respondent feels like they're informed well or very well about the origin of the products. Those, who evaluated themselves as uninformed show little to no interest in obtaining more information. When it comes to the education about origins of foods, digital media seems to currently only play a small role (8%).
