"Vicente Serisuelo: "We are exporting increasingly more Piel de Sapo"

"Piel de Sapo melons are usually the favourites in tastings"

Although the mild temperatures at the beginning of the season were not ideal for melon consumption and sales plummeted, there has since been a rebound of sales, and there were even shortages during the transition from Almeria to Murcia. Now, according to Vicente José Serisuelo, commercial director at Serifruit, "the supply and the demand are in balance. In products like melons, the weather plays a very important role in the demand, just as important as the product's taste, since if consumers do not have a good experience, they will not buy it again," he points out.



The Castellon-based company produces and sells citrus fruits throughout the year, and in order to provide a more complete service to its customers, it offers Piel de Sapo and yellow melon thanks to agreements with producers in Murcia and Castile-La Mancha, which supply it with large volumes. Every now and then, it also markets melons produced in the Region of Valencia.

"In recent years, our melon sales have increased by around 15% per year. While yellow melons are fully intended for export, we sell 60% of our Piel de Sapo melons in Spain, although our export volume is on the rise," affirms Vicente José Serisuelo.

The opportunities for Piel de Sapo melons outside Spain are growing, according to the marketer, even though their appearance is at odds with their flavour. "In the blind tastings we organise with several types of melon, the Piel de Sapo is usually the best rated one, above the Galia or Yellow. However, the results are different when we show the melons, so we came to the conclusion that their appearance is not very attractive for consumers in countries where Piel de Sapo melons are not traditionally consumed. Their flavour, in any case, makes them have a lot of potential and this is what we should be taking advantage of."

Germany, France, Italy or the Netherlands, among other European countries, are destinations where the shipments of Piel de Sapo melons are growing every year, and where they generally prefer smaller sizes than in Spain.
