Spain: Greater volume of melons available, but with smaller calibres

The good spring temperatures have allowed for a better settling after the flowering of the plants, which has resulted in "a greater volume of fruit, but with smaller calibres than last year," states José Luis Gimeno, director of Fruitas Marco Iborra.

This Spanish company started exporting melons of the Amaretto and Soleares varieties in 2016 and has taken full advantage of its well-known brands, Melania and Silvestre, to introduce this new product in the French, German and English markets, where they were already present with other products. "We allocate 100% of the melon production abroad because the prices are higher, although we are also open to agreements in Spain," adds Gimeno.

As for in the international markets, a kilo of these melons (Amaretto and Soleares) costs around 1.20 Euro in calibre 4 and 1.10 Euro in calibre 5. "The prices at the moment are practically the same as those recorded last year at this time (week 24)," states Gimeno.
