Strategic cooperation between Trieste and Duisburg for trade with China

The Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport) and the northern Italian port of Trieste will work more closely together in the future. Yesterday, Erich Staake, CEO of duisport, and Zeno D’Agostino, Presidente de porto Trieste, signed an agreement for the strategic cooperation between the ports.

The largest Italian sea port on the Adriatic Sea and duisport are now combined to act as Europe's central logistics hub and are able to strengthen the corridor between the two locations. The railroad systems and trailer traffic are planned to be extended, and new logistics centers will be built together. Staake: "duisport freight transport to and from Greece and Turkey will be extended by this measure, since these countries prefer to send their goods through the sea port of Trieste."

Apart from the extension of infrastructure between Duisburg and Trieste, the two companies are looking into shared investments in the hinterland of the port in Trieste, to develop an intermodal hinterland-terminal, a so-called "dryport".

Furthermore, both ports will optimize their connection to the Chinese Silk-Road-Initiative by cooperating. Starting at duisport, around 25 freight trains are taking the northern Silk Road to several destinations in China every week. The port of Trieste is connected by sea to Southern China, the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea.

Staake considers the cooperation a win for both ports: "Trieste gains the connection to the Northern Silk Road, the port of Duisburg will be able to connect to the maritime Silk Road. This will increase the goods flowing into either port."
