Spain: Brands as a tool for products to stand out

"Given the current situation, the only way to stand out from the rest and promote your products is with a brand; an image to enhance their reputation," assures José Illán, head of Terranifra. And this is what is working for them right now, since "we are selling our yellow Charentais melons in the Paris market for 1.30 Euro, when we heard that in Perpignan they are paying 0.85 Euro for them," comments the representative of Terranifra. However, "it has been a strange year for both melons and stonefruit," adds Illán.

Furthermore, it is necessary to take the productions of the importing countries into account. "We export 100% of our Charentais melon, some 2,000 tonnes, to France (60%), Germany (30%) and Switzerland (10%)," explains Illán. However, the French production is arriving earlier this year, so "from now on, our sales will start to come down and there will come a time when they will stop," affirms Illán.
