Egypt: Demand for Flame grapes increases every year

"We have noticed an increase in the production volume and the demand for grapes from Egypt," explains Mohamed Aleskandarany, manager of MUDGA International Trading. The country produces many tonnes of this fruit, which is mostly exported. "In our case, we have an average of 800,000 kilos a year and 100% goes to other countries in Africa and parts of Asia," points out Aleskandarany.

The list of products that this Egyptian company can offer includes grapes of the varieties Flame, Superior, Autumn Royal, Red Globe and Crimson, although the most demanded are always Flame. "The start of this campaign has not been very different to that of the previous one; the price stands at 10.5 Euro per 5 kilo box; a price which will gradually go down as the campaign develops," explains Aleskandarany. Also worth noting is that the minimum price obtained last season was 5.5 Euro for the same box.

In any case, growers are happy this year, as the government has launched a codification policy for farms and packers which will allow producers to get good prices by coding their farms.
