China: Noticeable increase in garlic exports

"This year, there was a 20 to 30% rise in garlic production. Market prices are gradually going back to normal," says Liu Yu Gang from Jinxiang Lianyi Trading.

"Garlic prices stayed high in the last few years. While under the same conditions, revenue from 1 mu (0,07 ha) of wheat has been 1000 yuan, but for garlic it has reached 10 000 yuan. Such a high income rate has significantly encouraged the garlic growing industry. Garlic farmers have increased their scale of production, and the farmers who hadn't been growing garlic before have joined the race. This has directly led to this year's 20% increase in garlic production areas."

Garlic is ready for export

Large garlic crops

"When it comes to crop characteristics, garlic heads are larger and better compared with last year. However, as a result of higher production and an increase in the number of varieties produced, there was a big fall in prices. They went from 15,000 yuan per ton all the way down to 6,000 to 7 000 yuan per ton. According to experts estimates, this year's prices will only fluctuate at the lower level. Since prices came back to normal, there's been a boom in the garlic market. Export rates are much higher than they were last year, especially in South-East Asia. Usually the garlic season starts in June, but this year the first Yunnan garlic has already appeared. The Henan harvest is already following it, this year it has arrived early. Garlic from Jinxiang Lianyi Trading Company dominates the market."

Waiting for packing into crates

"This year, owing to more stable prices and it's good quality, exported garlic is cheaper, but at the same time, the export rate has noticeably grown. In the next few months the price may fluctuate a bit, but the probability of any sharp rise is low. Our company exports garlic all over the world, mostly to South-East Asia, Africa and Australia. European and North American export is relatively low, but mostly because of market access mechanisms and limitations, such as disguised trade barriers."
