Peru fears return of El Niño in the second half of the year

It seems that the climatic contingencies give no respite to the country. Amelia Diaz, the head of the Senamhi, said that, even though the warm event had normalized at the national level, there were specific areas with maximum temperatures, such as in the southern mountains.

"We are witnessing the decline of the Coastal El Niño and there is a probability that there will be another Niño event in the region in the second half of the year. Thus, the Enfen (National Study of El Niño Phenomenon) is already adding this information in their communications and it will continue to monitor if this event takes place in the Pacific Center and its relationship with our summer," she said.

The specialist added that the Coastal Niño could be anticipated three months in advance, or at least five days. "The FEN not only pays attention to local conditions, it also encompasses tropical conditions," she said.

Regarding the current temperature, Amelia Diaz said that the temperature had normalized because of a cold Kelvin front. However, the Efen expects there will be a warm Kelvin front in June, something that is being reviewed in meetings every 15 days.

Finally, the official said that the institution's system of observation was linked to an average of 255 automatic stations, in agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, as well as conventional stations in which the information is Quickly transmitted by phone, voice, and data.

"Many of these stations are associated with fields where we monitor weather conditions, each of them is a weather station," she said.
