Chile: Seminar helps producers fall in love again with the kiwi business

"The goal of this seminar is to provide producers with information that shows them the kiwi business worldwide, and the positive projections of this business, so that they can join in this emerging opportunity. Today, there are many countries betting on kiwis, so it's important to see how we can fall in love again with a business that can be attractive and profitable again, but that requires us to make some changes in our production so that we can really take advantage of this good moment," said Carlos Cruzat, Chairman of the Kiwi Committee.

He added: "More than being a technical seminar, it will be a key information opportunity for participants. We want to show producers the product we must produce. For example, we will see what the Chinese market, which is currently a growing market, demands. This will help producer understand what kind of kiwi they have to produce if they want to grow in the market and make a profit."

To this effect, Kurt Huang, the Manager of the market wholesaler Huizhan of Shanghai, will speak at the seminar, where he'll present a talk called 'A Chinese importer's vision of Chilean fruit.

Cruzat also said that the participants of the seminar would also learn "how a group of Spanish farmers was able to organize, unite, and work to produce a high-quality kiwifruit that could compete, hand-to-hand, with the fruit of Zespri in Spain, which is a highly competitive global market." This experience will be shared by Carlos Vila, Director of Kiwi Atlantico from Spain.

The Kiwi Regional Seminars are framed within a new concept of the "Cycle of Technical-Commercial Update of the fruit industry: a contribution for the regions", carried out by the Association of Fruit Exporters of Chile AG (ASOEX) in coordination with the Kiwi Committee and with the sponsorship of ProChile, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Government of Chile, and the Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA). The seminar will take place on Tuesday June 20 at Curico's Union Club, and on June 23 at the Los Lirios Golf Club in the city of Rancagua.

The president of ASOEX, Ronald Bown said: "The global kiwi industry is going through a good moment. There are many countries that are noticing this and are investing in producing more and better kiwi. The national sector has the opportunity to take advantage of this moment, but it must do it in an informed manner and in the right way, which is why we are organizing these seminars, where highlighted national professionals and foreign experts will deliver relevant information, from their own experiences and research."
