China: Yantai outdoor cherries enter market early

"Yantai outdoor cherries normally go on sale in the beginning of June every year. The sales period lasts about one month. This year, because of the hot and dry weather, the production season was a week earlier than in previous years, so sales have already started," says Mr. Jiang from Kailinnuo Internet Information Science and Technology.

"A big difference of cherries when compared to bananas, apples and other major fruit varieties, is that cherries are relatively more expensive on the market. Stimulated by the economic profits, many farmers in Yantai and surroundings have opted to expand their cultivation surface for cherries in the past few years, which has led to increased production. On the other hand, the dry weather this year has caused a decrease in production volume. The combination of these two factors resulted in a small increase in the production volume overall. Moreover, the high temperatures and dry weather conditions have affected the quality of the fruit. This has driven the market price of the cherries down by 20% compared to the same period last year."

"We mainly sell our Yantai outdoor cherries through online channels. Our top-quality fruits are sold to first-tier and second-tier cities in China. The normal fruits are sold to wholesale markets all over China."
