The reopening of the US market to Jalisco's avocados will take place once Mexico and the US have renegotiated their Free Trade Agreement (FTA), stated Hector Padilla Gutierrez, the head of the Ministry of Rural Development (Seder). Gutierrez also stated that he was confident that the renegotiation of the agreement would be favorable for local and national agricultural products.
He said that, next week, the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing and Food (Sagarpa) and the Ministry of Economy (SE), was going to send them the proposed agenda for such renegotiation with representatives of the US Government. "We hope this will happen as a package under the FTA. I am confident that the negotiation will work out because it is based on mutual needs."
This came following the refusal of the United States to allow access to about five shipments with almost 100 tons of avocado that was going to be marketed in the United States, and which ended in Canadian territory. The US argued the shipments lacked paperwork, negotiations, and signatures by federal authorities.
Avocado producers from Jalisco expect the renegotiations will be beneficial for both nations, but are also seeking to position and consolidate the sale of Jalisco's avocado in other countries.
