More organic fruits and vegetables are being grown

The organic market is a growth market. Organic farming has grown steadily in recent years in Switzerland. In 2016 organically cultivated farmland increased by 4%. the Swiss retail market is showing a similar trend. There, the sales of organic vegetables rose by 10% and that of organic fruits by 18% in 2016.

Organic cultivation area for open ground vegetables increases by 5 percent in 2016
The organic cultivation area for one-year-old open ground vegetables (including canned vegetables) again rose by 5% from 2015 to 2016. The cultivation area of organic vegetable crops in greenhouses or protected crops, on the other hand, remained almost constant, with the entire cultivation area for protected crops declining slightly since 2014.

The cultivation area for organic orchards is stagnating at a low level
In fruit orchards, the organic share was still relatively low at 8 percent in 2016. Following a steady increase in the cultivation area of organic orchards in the years 2008-2013, it has remained stable or declining in the past three years.

Berry boom
Since 2011, the cultivation area for organic berries has recorded annual growth rates in the double-digit range. In 2016 the cultivation area increased by 9% compared to the previous year.
