Review of the import market in week 18

China: Cherry market down, Spanish oranges up

This is the first working week after the small holiday of 1 May. The overall sales situation on the import market of Shanghai is moving from a cold and cheerless situation to a more cheerful one. This influences all the imported products and shows how the market for US cherries is unstable and has adjusted downward. The sales speed of oranges has slightly slowed down and, on the avocado market, the price difference between fresh and stock products is gradually growing.

Following the arrival of the fresh batch of US cherries last week, they went on the market at a very high price. This week, new batches of cherries have been brought in by plane continuously. But harvest costs were high and sales early in the season are high and the market consumption capacity is limited. The quality of early-season cherries is also not stable enough. Newly arriving cherries often show blemishes, low sweetness and uneven colour. As a result, the sales speed of the American cherries has gradually been slowing down. The original price of 1000 RMB has also been adjusted downward to around 800 RMB.

Another fruit that has equally been showing a slowed down sales speed in the middle and high end markets, is the American orange. Because the quality of the oranges that came in this week was not stable enough, the price of all US orange brands have been adjusted downward to different extents. Strong brands with a lot of popularity on the market are able to maintain their prices at 360 RMB to 370 RMB (an example is No 88), the same No 88 variety of other US brands has been forced to reduce the price to 350 RMB to 360 RMB. In comparison, the sales situation of Spanish oranges is taking a turn for the better this week. Not only has the sales speed increased, but several orange brands have gone up in price. Some brands with a good reputation on the market of Shanghai, Uno and Motilla are good examples. Their current price has increased to 250 RMB. At the same time this week, the new Israeli oranges are performing well on the market as well. No 64 oranges already have reached a price of 230 RMB to 240 RMB.

In the avocado section, the Mexican and Chilean avocados are increasingly present on the market. But the overall quality of these avocados is not stable, so the fresh avocados that are brought over by plane and are more stable in quality currently occupy a market void. This also causes an increasing pricing gap between fresh and old avocados. This Friday, 5 new containers of avocados were opened that came by sea. The overall quality of these avocados was rather bad, so the whole sales speed on the market has gone down slightly. At present, the price for relatively good quality Mexican avocados is at 300 RMB (No 35). The price of avocados of lesser quality is around 200 RMB with brisk sales results.
