FreshPlaza Special for March
Large overlap led to pressure on melon prices

Tholen - This month's special will cover the worldwide melon market. The coming weeks, FreshPlaza will feature articles about several producers, shippers and exporters. They will tell about their company and the expectations for the melon season. Furthermore, a couple of European importers will discuss their import programmes.

From May to September, the Spanish melon production has its peak. From September to May, European importers source their melons mainly from South and Central America. At the moment, a lot of melons from Costa Rica, Panama and Honduras are available on the market. However, the market for these melons is rather difficult since Brazilian melons are still available. Last year's prices were about 1 Euro higher than now.

Nevertheless, the expectations for the rest of the season are positive. There were some rumors that low temperatures weighed upon the Costa Rican production, possibly causing a delay. But at the moment this appears to be untrue.

Due to heavy rainfall in Panama, a lot of fruit has been destroyed, and the supply will been smaller than last year. This creates a better market for Costa Rican melons, but a lot is still unclear.

If you want to share information about the melon season, please send your press release to lody@freshplaza.com or call me at +31 166 698 202.
