Willem Dijk AGF visits Agrofrut

Greek watermelon season about to begin

Watermelons, harvested in Greece from May to September, make their way through the whole of Europe. The western part of Peloponnese is well-known for its watermelon cultivation. A constant breeze blowing in from the Ionian Sea creates an ideal climate for growing watermelons. Last week Ronnie Moorman from Willem Dijk AGF visited the area. He was a guest of the Pantazis family of AgroFrut Vassilis Pantazis S.A.

Vassilis Pantazis has headed up this family business for more than 25 years. They export watermelons, oranges and dried white figs to the whole of Europe. Agrofrut exports mainly to Italy, the Netherlands and Scandinavia.

"Agrofrut is a real family business. Vassilis' wife and children play an important role. It is a modern company that holds innovation and quality in high regard. Vassilis's children are an important factor in this. They have both successfully completed their studies at Wageningen University. This year we also saw evidence of their attempt to grow produce of a higher quality. A number of improvements have been made in their cultivation method. This has led to better watermelons. Greenhouse growing and covered and open field growing mean you can start start cultivating the perfect product sooner in the season", says Ronnie.

"As you can see Agrofrut is an important partner in watermelons for us. Now we have the first haul of oval Greek Samantha watermelons available. Later in the season we will also have the round varieties, Crimson and Bostana. Given the developments in the market, we are expecting a good season with high quality fruit", Ronnie concludes.
