La Fenice network for Cipolla Rossa di Tropea Calabria IGP producers

Sharing strategic ideas, favouring cooperation and combining strengths and resources are the main objectives of new business network La Fenice.

"These are essential concepts that sum up the idea of working as a team to reach goals that would be difficult to achieve individually," explains Giuseppe Larìa, President of La Fenice.

"We believe that, in order to grow and be competitive, we need to centralise supplies and overcome fragmentation."

"With the support of 10 producers of PGI red onions from Tropea, we shared our ideas and built the bases to generate a more modern and innovative system."

"We are certain this will enable us to work as a team, thus sharing costs and resources and being reliable partners. La Fenice can handle 5,000 tons of accurately selected produce guaranteeing high quality standards."

"The common objective is to grow food that is good while maintaining the fertility of the soil intact. The traceability and health of our products - guaranteed by production specifications - are a priority for us."

La Fenice intends to meet multiple market demands with a supply ranging from fresh onions to onion-based products.

"Cipolla Rossa di Tropea Calabria IGP" onions are local bulbs of the Allium species that have a unique shape and whose ripening depends on light conditions.

The production area includes suitable land located within the Cosenza, Catanzaro and Vibo Valentia provinces. Sowing starts in August in nurseries, fields or cells.

Transplants are carried out between October and January for the early varieties and between January and March for the late varieties, when plants in nurseries are 15 cm high and have 4-5 leaves. Cipollotti are planted directly, alternatively, seedlings/bulbs can be transplanted from August onwards.

"Packagers are also part of our network to guarantee full control of the entire chain. Production specifications state that the onions should be packaged where they are produced, so packagers become extremely important. Retailers can only distribute it."

"These contracts maintain the identity of each single business unaltered but enable them to share resources to increase their profits and improve the visibility of the brand on both the domestic and international markets."
