Week 17: Review of the Shanghai market

China: First green apples from NZ and US cherries hit the market

This week, the market in Shanghai has welcomed the first green apples from New Zealand, as well as American cherries, which means the supply on the import market becomes more and more varied. Simultaneously, the demand for imported citrus fruits is still rising steadily, but because the harbor of Shanghai is very crowded, only very few products can reach the market in time. This will definitely lead to a rise of the market price.

This week, the market price of imported apples has risen, especially the Gala apples from New Zealand and Chile. Even though the products are not being sold that fast, the sales prices still have gotten higher. Last week, the price of Gala apples from Chile, for example, was fluctuating between 140 and 180. This week, however, the price has risen to 210 yuan/box. The price of apples from New Zealand has also seen a rise of 10-20 yuan. This week, the price has already reached 210-220 yuan/box. This Thursday, the first batch of green apples from New Zealand arrived in Shanghai and is now for sale. These are the first Granny Smith apples from the new apple season in New Zealand. The overall quality is good, and the taste slightly sour. Sales start with a price of approximately 380 yuan, with an average selling speed.

After the green apples from New Zealand, this Sunday, Shanghai will also welcome the first batch of American cherries. These will attract attention from a lot of sellers.

It is reported that this first batch of American cherries, from the brand Rooks, will not have even colors, compared to the 9.5 Row norm, because these are early fruits. The selling speed is high, however, so the average sales price will be 1000/box or higher.

Furthermore, because the Shanghai harbor is too crowded, a lot of imported oranges can't reach the market in time. The market demand is constantly rising, so the price of citrus fruits will also continue to rise this week. American oranges, for example, which now have the highest price of all the imported oranges, still had a price of approximately 370-380 yuan on Monday. On Friday, however, the price had already risen to 420-430 yuan, and they have been selling steadily. It appears that the price for Egyptian oranges has also seen a small increase in price this week. The price is now 140-155 yuan. Now that the temperatures are rising, and the market demand is constantly growing, the market for imported citrus fruits will be better in May.
