The season for winter leek is almost over. What is coming from the land now, is stored in cooling cells until the first summer leeks are available again (around June 15). The prices are expected to go up over the coming time, but this also depends on the harvest in Spain. It will be an exciting period. "At the moment the price is around 40 cents, whilst the price in this time should be around 50 cents," says Kees Jansen of Gebroeders Jansen from Etten-Leur. "Spanish leeks will arrive on the market in May, they will determine our price."
The winter leek prices in the Netherlands are therefore not at the desired level. At the start of 2017 the prices were high and were around 1.10 - 1.20 Euro, with highs of 1.50 Euro. "These high prices unfortunately chased away the customers," says Kees. "after this the price dropped to 90 cents. In March the price suddenly collapsed to 15 cents at the auction. After a calm period it is now pulling up again. You could say it has been an extreme leek year."
