Increasing profit by inspiring and advising shoppers?

A high profit starts with supporting shoppers in choosing their products. For example, what is the best vine tomato for a delicious salsa? Dutch growers association Door Partners is advising and inspiring shoppers in various ways in order that dishes will not only become tastier, but sales will get a boost too.

Next to knowledge about products, knowing what drives shoppers to buy certain products is crucial for a high profit. Try approaching vine tomatoes as ingredients for example, instead of products of which to sell as many as possible. When shoppers write their shopping list, it contains various ingredients that – when put together – form a dish. Here, a real difference can be made; which vine tomato has the best characteristics for a great pasta sauce?

The Dutch growers association hopes that with their partners they can advise and inspire shoppers in many ways. In the store, in a magazine or on social media, they hope to share their knowledge so shoppers can choose specific vine tomatoes to perfectly match a dish or cooking method. Some varieties are great in a salad while others taste best when they are grilled. There idea is that a positive result in the kitchen will ultimately lead to products being bought more often in the future.

Another way of inspiring shoppers in their choice, is adding a bonus to certain products. Dutch supermarket Albert Heijn introduced the ‘Fresh Mix’ for example; a selection of fresh vegetables that become cheaper when bought together instead of as separate items, encouraging shoppers to buy more. Bulk value packs are no longer only applicable to biscuits, sweets and non-perishable products, as fresh produce such as fruit and vegetables are also purchased in larger quantities.
