Mark Verweij, VerDi Import:
“Good absorption of Spanish Doré, the market is tired of old harvest”
The first lorryload of Spanish Doré was unloaded at VerDi Import last Saturday. VerDi grows Spanish Doré in the delta of the Rio Guadalquivir in the southernmost tip of Spain. “Various Spanish regions had bad weather, and the potato cultivations suffered because of that. Fortunately, ours didn’t, although we are a few days later than normally,” says Mark Verweij.
Saturday helper Rutger Heijkamp with the first harvest.
“The market is tired of the old harvest potatoes, and is looking forward to something new. That’s why the absorption is very good,” the potato trader says. “We have been growing Doré in southern Spain for ten years. Because of this, we know how to find the correct soils, seed potatoes, partners and logistics. It’s quite an art, which cannot be done on the side. We were already a true specialist in new harvest potatoes with Verweij Arrdappelen Barendrecht, and we still are with VerDi.”
VerDi Import also imports Galatine earlies and Malta Alpha, which are expected in the coming week, and additionally, the company is the largest importer of Nicola potatoes from Morocco. This Moroccan Nicola is mostly sold in Eastern Europe.
