Onions dominate vegetable farming in Saxony-Anhalt

According to the Regional Statistics Office, the vegetable farmers in Saxony-Anhalt used almost 4,219 hectares of farmland for open ground vegetables in 2016. The cultivation area rose by 8.3 percent compared to the previous year. Onions were the most farmed vegetable in Saxony-Anhalt in 2016. They claimed almost one third of the vegetable farmland (1,354 hectares). The strongest growing vegetables in the country were onions, carrots, asparagus, green beans and radishes.

Asparagus was grown on 734 hectares, of those 607 hectares were harvested. In 2008 asparagus was harvested on 1,067 hectares of land. This year it grew to around one sixth of the open ground vegetable cultivation area (17%). Onions and asparagus thus claimed almost half (49%) of the total open ground vegetable cultivation area.

The carrot farmland was increased to 696 hectares (+5.7%) last year (2015: 659 ha). Green beans came to 322 hectares. On average, from 2010 to 2015 they were were harvested from 296 hectares of land. Radishes were at 297 hectares. On average, from 2010 to 2015 they were harvested from 344 hectares of land.
